Our College of Engineering is leading land-grant institutions into the 21st century. Following its legacy as the first land-grant college tasked with developing the technologies that pushed back the 19th-century frontier, Iowa State is investigating the science and innovating the technologies that will improve our quality of life and push back new frontiers in the 21st century. Iowa State’s College of Engineering ranks second nationally in R&D100 research and development awards, fifth nationally in patents awarded, and twelfth nationally in start-up companies launched from its research.
Our college has established itself as the “go to” destination for students to begin their careers and pursue graduate study. We have one of the 10 largest undergraduate engineering programs in the nation. Our learning communities, ranked in the top five nationally, focus on preparing our students to become future leaders in business, industry, academics, and government. The problem-solving skills learned from an engineering education at Iowa State provide an excellent launching pad for careers not only in technology, but also medicine, law, business, and many other fields.

The University of Iowa
The College of Engineering is one of 11 colleges at The University of Iowa. It teaches undergraduate and graduate coursework in biomedical, chemical and biochemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, industrial, and mechanical engineering.
The College stands out among many engineering schools because all six programs have major teaching and research linkages to the University’s Health Sciences colleges. Its undergraduate biomedical engineering program is one of only 49 accredited biomedical and bioengineering undergraduate programs in the U.S., and is 8th nationally in the number of biomedical engineering B.S. degrees awarded.
Engineering@Iowa® is recognized for its personalized student-oriented mission—coupled with the resources of a major research university. The College is ranked among the top 20% of graduate and undergraduate colleges of engineering in America. Many of our students come to Iowa because they know that they want to become engineers, but they want to be something more. They can combine engineering with the University’s strong liberal arts focus—in international studies, writing and communications, health sciences, business, law, arts and humanities. The College of Engineering excels internationally in several research areas: computer-aided design and simulation, human factors, environmental health solutions, biotechnology, medical imaging, hydraulics and water/air resources, and photopolymerization. Its Environmental Engineering program is ranked 10th among U.S. public universities.
UI Engineering graduates have used their leadership qualities in many ways – as chief officers of ExxonMobil, Cessna Aircraft, Rockwell Collins, Black & Veatch Energy, and Seagate Technology, and as Chief of the Army Corps of Engineers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, and Ministers of Education and Water Resources of Taiwan.
