It's no secret that humans are creatures of habit. From our daily routines to our bathroom habits, we tend to stick with what works for us. But when it comes to how often you should pee, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer (thank goodness, because that would be gross).
So how do you know if your bladder is too full or not full enough? And why does it seem like some people can go all day without peeing while others have to run to the bathroom every ten minutes? Don't worry, we've got answers.
The Bladder Basics
Before we get into specifics about how often you should pee, let's do a quick review on how this whole bladder thing works.
Your kidneys are responsible for filtering waste out of your blood and creating urine. That urine then travels down two tubes called ureters and collects in your bladder (yes, that thing inside you where all the pee is stored) until you're ready to release it.
When urine builds up in your bladder, nerves signal your brain letting it know its time to empty the tank. This typically happens around 16-24 ounces of liquid in the average adult but can vary from person-to-person.
So How Often Should You Go?
The short answer? It depends! Here are a few key things take into consideration:
Your Age
As unfortunate as aging may feel at times, (we won’t go there) as we grow older our bladders weaken which means less space for holding waste materials hence more frequent trips {see Table A}. Kids need more bathroom breaks than oldies maybe ever hence much urgency increases with age..
Your Sex
Generally speaking, women have smaller bladders than men so they may need to urinate more frequently.
Hydration Status
Drinking fluids will cause your bladder to fill faster and cause you to urinate more frequently.
Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions such as diabetes or overactive bladder may make you need to pee more often.
If none of these categories apply strongly, then about 6-7 times a day could be considered fairly normal and if you are exceeding that number considerably, it might be worth checking in with your healthcare provider..(because we only want you peeing clearly!)
Even with all this said (Did that help at all? Yeah neither did it for me) remember that every body is different so listening to your own can also go along way.Learn when yours asks for release or when its ready again {see Table B}.
Timing Is Everything
So now we know how many times per day on average most people should roughly attempt the bathroom breaks, but what about the timing of those trips? When is too much (or too little!)?
It’s really important not to hold onto urine for long periods of time because this can lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and a weakened pelvic floor. In other words, don't wait until it's an emergency situation before making a pitstop.
On the other hand, constantly running back-and-forth from the loo can disrupt your day-to-day tasks., So try monitoring yourself without being obsessive; asking yourself regularly throughout the day whether natures’ calling has come yet.
Below are some recommended 'time windows' should follow courtesy {Table C}:
Morning | Midday | Evening |
---|---|---|
After wake up direct | Approximately 2 hours gap | A couple minutes prior sleep possibly |
Note: These aren’t set numbers related directly pertaining across age groups but rather generally speaking..
Of course there will always be exceptions--like playing sports where water intake is high therefore urgent peeing is common, but generally listening to your own body can help keep you from overdoing it or underdoind it (hygiene wise too!).
Conclusion
In short,(no pun intended) there's no perfect answer as to how often you should pee. But knowing the general recommendations based on age, gender and other factors can be useful nonetheless along with personalized internal check-ins throughout the day so we never have a lapse of judgement during an important meeting because our bladders are screaming at us to use that ladies room down the hall.
We hope this article has helped in someway as all We just ask now if its cool if I go {wink} .
